Before we proceed to shortly introduce Zafarraya, let us put together, as a visual aid, the three regions (or "comarcas" in Spanish) where we are active in, at the moment. To keep you oriented we have outlined the two major cities in the area, Málaga and Granada. The main region, and our home, is:

Within this last region, Zafarraya is a municipality that includes the population centres of Zafarraya, El Almendral, Venta de la Leche and Rincón de los Reinas.
Its lands have been inhabited since prehistoric times as attested by remains found in the Boquete de Zafarraya cave and known as the Zafarraya Man. As old as 30,000 years, these are the remains of a Neanderthal man, and they represent the last Neanderthals that lived on the entire planet. The human remains found in Zafarraya are unique and exceptional and they were investigated by the most complete and complex research carried out at the international level, to date.
Apart from its historical relevance, Zafarraya is also known for a geological feature - the Zafarraya Polje. A polje, a word derived from the Slavic languages and literally meaning "field", is a large flat plain found in karstic geological regions of the world. The Zafarraya Polje is the largest karst depression in the Iberian Peninsula, with a very flat bottom and a complex internal morphology.
