Alcaucín is located within the Natural Park of Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, so its territory is quite rugged, with numerous ridges and deep valleys. Sierra Tejeda is the highest part of this mountainous complex, reaching 2,066 meters at the peak of La Maroma, pictured below:

 

 

From this iconic peak you get spectacular views of the Mediterranean coast and the neighbouring mountains, including the highest peak of the Iberian Peninsula, Mulhacen (3,479m). The Natural Park constitutes a natural border between the provinces of Málaga and Granada and a favourite destination among hikers and mountaineers. 

 

Another important element within the Natural Park is the mountain pass Boquete de Zafarraya, a natural passage between the two neighbouring provinces of Málaga and Granada, where the cave Cueva del Boquete de Zafarraya is located, at an altitude of about 1,100 meters and, administratively, within the municipality of Alcaucín. This cave has great palaeontological importance, being the site that has provided the greatest number of Neanderthal remains on the Iberian Peninsula. The other defining element of our area, Lake Viñuela, is a man-made reservoir which provides drinking water for the entire region of Axarquía and it represents a picturesque aspect of the local landscape. Scattered around the southern end of the lake, there are several picnic areas, with fantastic views of the lake and the mountains behind it.
