Within the region of La Axarquía, Vélez-Málaga is the most important municipality out of the 31 that make it up, the largest one and is considered the capital of the Axarquía.

 

The municipality is made up of 12 population nuclei, 8 of which are coastal: Almayate, Benajarafe, Caleta de Vélez, Chilches, Lagos, Mezquitilla, Torre del Mar and Valle-Niza while the other 4 are located inland: Cajíz, Trapiche, Triana and Vélez-Málaga.
